ELMHURST JUNIOR WOMEN'S CLUB
EVENTS
Although the main purpose of our organization is philanthropical, everything we do involves a social aspect! We offer many chances to get together and socialize...some for women of the Club only, and others involving our children, spouses and the public.
For those women in the Club with children, a Playgroup is available. This is the perfect opportunity to have your kids experience their own version of Juniors! While the kids make new friends and get the opportunity to experience new toys and equipment, the moms are nearby supervising but enjoying some adult conversation at the same time! This group meets at either local parks, members homes or the occasional indoor playland.
The last Sunday in April is host to our largest fundraiser of the year: The Elmhurst Kitchen Expedition. This event is open to the public (at least those over the age of 12!) and is a great way to see some amazing homes and spectacular kitchens. This first-floor only house walk features a culinary twist. Six fabulous Elmhurst homes are opened to the public and decorated for the day by local florists and home decor retailers. For more information, be sure to view our Kitchen Expedition web page.
Tickled Pink, our second largest fundraiser of the year, is typically held the first Friday in October, in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness month. At this fundraiser for women of all ages, members, their guests and the general public have the opportunity to shop a variety of exclusive vendors. As with most Juniors events, food and beverages are available. Additionally, our younger guests can get mini-manicures and have their hair braided. What a great mother-daughter event -- and it all benefits a great cause. Please see our Tickled Pink web page for more information.
The Halloween Walk at Lexington Health Care Center is usually held the weekend before Halloween. It is open to club members and their families. The children wear their costumes and do crafts while the seniors at the center exclaim to one another how cute the kids are! There is also a costume parade for the children -- a big hit with the kids as the residents provide trick-or-treat candy for all who participate!
Each year, the Elmhurst Park District places trees in the green of Wilder Park that local community groups have sponsored. In late November or early December, members and their families gather at an Ornament Making Party to create the decorations for the EJWC sponsored tree. Members and their families join again to witness the tree lighting ceremony as a group at Wilder Park.
The first Saturday in December traditionally is host to our Treats with Santa party. This event is open to members and their families. We come together to enjoy treats, create fun craft items and see the big-man himself: Santa Claus! All without the hectic pace and hassle of heading to the mall! There is no line for Santa and it's all at a minimal cost.
We're not just about women and children here at EJWC. We also want to bring our husbands into the group and have them meet some of their community neighbors! For this, we offer several opportunities:
Dinner with Spouses is our most popular couples event. They are offered quarterly with the option of selecting one of two available evenings. Typically, four couples will gather at one member's home for dinner and sometimes, games. The host will determine the theme or meal for the entree and each attending couple will bring a portion of the meal (i.e. appetizer, salad or dessert). It's a great opportunity to get to know other members in a more intimate, less intimidating environment. It's great for the men as well because they have the opportunity to meet the wonderful women we are always talking about and make some new friends in the community as well.
If dinner for eight is just too small of a group for your husband, there is always the annual Cocktail Party. Drinks Around the World is the 2006 version of this event held on February 25th. There are four host homes, each within walking distance of one another. Each home will be serving food and beverages from a particular country: Spain, Ireland, Japan and France. A Silent Auction will also be held in each home to raise money for the many charities we support.
In the event that dinner and drinks just aren't your thing and you need to be more active to get involved in an event, then we have the function for you. Our Scavenger Hunt, held in November is an immense amount of fun. Members and their guests start and finish the evening at one member's home. We then have just under two hours to go around town to various locations and answer 100 questions. There are prizes for the most completed, fasted finishers and most creative answers.
Book Club is designed to be a gathering of members to share their opinions after reading a book. Operating as most book clubs do, members who are interested in this interest group will select a novel and meet to discuss their thoughts at either a restaurant or member's home.
Bunco Club is another excuse to leave your hubbies home with the kids. Join other members for a fun filled evening of socialization and Bunco. This group is a great way to get to know other members better!
Can't get your significant other to see the latest chick-flick with you? Join us on Movie Night. The movie is selected based on the selection playing at the York Classic Cinemas at the right time on the right night, so it's not always a traditional chick flick, but it is always something with appeal. If you can't make the movie, maybe you can join us afterwards at a local establishment for some liquid refreshments????
If you can convince your husband to watch the kids one more time, we have an actual Ladies Night. In the past, we have held this event at a stained glass workshop where members were able to make a beautiful Mosaic piece to take home. The 2006 event is Spa Night at Bilancio on April 7. Club members are able to make appointments for spa services and enjoy food, beverages, and friendly conversations. The spa is closed to the public so you are there with only your friends...what a way to relax and enjoy the night!
Our Juniors fiscal year ends with our May Banquet. This event always takes the place of our traditional May general meeting. It is held the second Monday of May and we always choose and Elmhurst restaurant as the location. This year, May 8th will see all the EJWC members heading to Fuego Loco on York for this fun cap on a great year!
