The all volunteer staff at A Special Wish Foundation dedicates their time and efforts to granting the wishes of children, from birth to age 21, in the Chicagoland area, with life threatening conditions. To qualify for a wish, a child must not have achieved their twenty-first birthday at the time of presenting their wish request; they must have a condition that is considered to be life threatening as determined by their physician; and they may not have received a wish from any other wish granting organization. American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major heath problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy and service. Providing transitional housing to homeless families in DuPage County is Bridge Communities main goal. They accomplish this through partnerships with faith-based and community organizations who provide the mentoring relationships which root homeless families into local neighborhoods. The mission of Child's Voice, located in Wood Dale, is to help children who are deaf or hard of hearing optimize their listening, speech, language and academic skills and their self-confidence so they can be successful in mainstream educational settings and society in general. This miss is accomplished through a developmentally based curriculum to promote oral communication and reasoning skills, through parent education and involvement and through liaison services to ensure successful transition to home school districts. DuPage PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) is committed to end and prevent homelessness in DuPage County. The Elmhurst Juniors Women's Club is proud to assist the Elmhurst Public Library. The library, in addition to being a source of books, magazines, DVDs, music and other entertainment and research items, also is a pillar of our community. The Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra has been in existence for over nearly 50 years. Recent awards include "Community Orchestra of the Year" from the Illinois Council of Orchestras. The ESO is an Illinois not-for-profit organization which treats Elmhurst residents and members of the surrounding community to an exceptional cultural experience as they listen to timeless music. EJWC supports the ESO through volunteering as ushers for their programs and assisting in selling raffle tickets for their fundraiser. Elmhurst Walk-In Ministry provides help for needy families in Elmhurst and is made up of representatives from twenty churches and six community organizations. The participating churches and service organizations are untied in partnership to provide compassionate, effective, non-duplicated emergency assistance to people in need within our community. Since 1950, Ray Graham Association for People with Disabilities has been supporting children and adults with developmental disabilities. Today, this organization serves more than 2,300 people across DuPage and Cook Counties, providing developmental, recreational, residential, respite and vocational services. The Ray Graham Association is dedicated to the full participation of all people with developmental disabilities in a quality of life by providing leadership that supports the accomplishments of individuals, strengthens families and inspires involvement. The DuPage County Health Department's "Why Wait?" Program has screened nearly 2,000 income eligible women since it began in 1996. Local hospitals and healthcare providers partner to provide clinical services while the health department provides educational programs and case management services. The goal of this program is to reduce breast and cervical cancer mortality rates among women through early detection and increased awareness of the need for early detection through education.
